Magic Kingdom

Stephen and I had gone back and forth for several months about taking Little Miss S to Disney World.

PRO: until May 12 she gets in FREE
CON: she probably wouldn't remember it
PRO: she is in LOVE with Mickey and Minnie Mouse

After much debate and a change in date, we finally ended up going the week of December 3. It ended up being the PERFECT week for a trip to Disney (and Sea World and Busch Gardens) because the weather was warm AND there weren't major crowds. We had hoped that would be the case with a couple of weeks of school left before Christmas and it seemed to work out well.

The entire trip turned out really well because we had a free place to stay in Tampa (thanks, Danny!) and my cousin was able to get us free and/or discounted tickets to Busch Gardens, Christmas Town at Busch Gardens, and Sea World (thanks, Debbie!!!). This meant that we were able to book a better quality hotel in Orlando, closer to the action, and with a shuttle!

We stayed in Bowman on Monday night, so we could trade cars (for a bigger one) and be an hour closer to Orlando. It really isn't a bad drive from Bowman to Orlando. Maybe 6 hours? We set off around 9 on Tuesday and Little Miss slept for a LONG part of the morning. We stopped for a picnic lunch at the Florida Welcome Center and then drove the rest of the way. Little Miss was incredibly good in the car!

When we got to our hotel, Little Miss was ecstatic because Mickey and Minnie were everywhere. Passing the gift shop, she immediately wanted a new stuff Minnie, which we held off on until we got to Downtown Disney that evening. Little Miss enjoyed Downtown Disney because there were Minnie and Mickeys to see and trains and carousels to ride!

She also some ice cream (belatedly we realized that when she says ice cream, she really means chocolate milkshake!) and was well behaved for dinner at a nice Italian place. As you can see in the train picture, we gave in A LOT on this trip for the "no sa except in the crib" rule. A tired and cranky 2 year old is much less cranky when there's a pacifier in her face!

Little Miss slept great in the hotel in her Pack 'n Play and we were up and ready to face the day the next morning. As you can see, we gave in the night before and picked up a stuffed Minnie (not counting the big and tiny one that we already had or the one we bought her later at Disney!).

We rode the hotel shuttle over to Disney. Their policy is that if you stay there the night before you can stay parked there and ride the shuttle, so we took advantage of that!

Our first stop once we got inside the park was to find the line for meeting Mickey. That was on the short list of "We Must Do This" that we had. The line was virtually non-existent - it was a 5-minute wait time. She was excited to go see Mickey - we'd been talking it up for a couple of days. However, we also wondered how she would respond to a full-sized Mickey, especially given her reaction to Santa Claus! The verdict: she HATES real life Mickey!

Petrified, petrified, petrified is the way to describe her. They usher you into this smaller room to wait when it's almost your turn, so she could see Mickey that entire time and was SCREAMING to leave. But we got her picture with Mickey! We didn't attempt to see the princesses at the Theater because we were afraid she might have the same reaction. She also freaked out when she saw Pluto ACROSS the plaza from us.

We did a couple of live action tests on the way over to the rides. She passed those with flying colors. Real people = no problemo! Mary Poppins was right next to the Theater where Mickey and the Princesses are, so we almost went back for the princesses, but we decided that we needed to get to the rides before the lines got too long. We met the Fairy Godmother on the way to Fantasyland. We also finally stopped to get her an autograph book, which unfortunately means no Mickey autograph :( She does love "my book and pen" though!

On to the rides! Our goal was to get through the main rides at Fantasyland because those were the main kid's rides. She rode the carousel first because she LOVES merry-go-rounds. Next we rode the Winnie the Pooh ride, which she seemed to like okay, and then the Teacups, which she really enjoyed (especially searching for the Dormouse to pop out!). There was no wait for the carousel or the Teacups (other than waiting for the ride in front of us to finish) and the wait for Winnie the Pooh was 10-15 minutes.

Then we discovered Dumbo, which had to be her favorite ride. She rode it at least 3 times and would have ridden it a zillion more if we let her. Clearly the wait times for Dumbo weren't much worse than the others! It did get a little bit longer the closer we got to noon. She will STILL talk about it - how it goes "up in the air" and then "down in the water". She now has a stuffed Dumbo, which she could really care less about, and has actually watched part of the movie.

Minnie, Daisy, Donald, and Goofy were all available for Meet and Greets at the Storybook Circus around the corner from Dumbo, so we decided to see if Minnie was any better than Mickey. The answer - NOPE. We had to wait 10-15 minutes in line for our pictures with Minnie and Daisy. Goofy and Donald were across the tent from us and we decided not to continue to traumatize her!

There's some pretty good video of her waiting in line that I will add at some point.

We then went on to It's A Small World (after stopping to eat lunch on a bench), which Little Miss also LOVED. We went on it twice in a row (maybe a 5 minute wait?). She wanted to go again, but we couldn't handle that song one more time!

From there, we wandered for a little while trying to convince her to nap in A) the stroller or B) the Ergo. The result: no nap, a cranky 2-year-old, and 2 cranky parents. We did ride the steamboat and then basically stumbled off to where they were roping of the parade route (bad mommy moment: I had completely forgotten the parade). We decided that since there were plenty of spaces we would pull up some concrete and watch! Little Miss did really well sitting and waiting and she also was a lot calmer about the costumed characters wandering down the parade route - that's not to say that she didn't have a minor freak out every time one walked by her. BUT she did wave to The Beast!

We ended the day at Magic Kingdom by riding the train (which she didn't love as much as we thought she would), catching part of the show in front of Cinderella's Castle (which she happily watched for several minutes), and shopping on Main Street (where we picked up a pair of Minnie flip flops that she LOVES LOVES LOVES - you can see them below). We were getting ready to head out the gates when we decided to stop at the Princess Meet and Greet. The wait time was only 5-10 minutes, so Little Miss and I headed on in. Clearly it's just people hiding in costumes that she doesn't like because she was EXHAUSTED, but willingly went up to each princess, let her sign her book, and gave her a hug!

She passed out within minutes of getting in her car seat. Mommy and Daddy stopped at a random Wendy's on I-4 on our way to Tampa. We had hoped for an easy transition to her PnP for bedtime once we got to Danny's that night. No such luck - she was a little hungry, so we fed her PLUS Danny has a huge (not life size but big) Santa that sings and dances). Little Miss was terrified of him and kept asking if Santa was going to come in the room with us! I think it was 10:30 or 11 before we got her to go to sleep!

My Favorite Things: The Journey

We did an excellent study for Advent in our Sunday school class this year (I say Advent, but we started it mid-November to be able to get it all in)! It was The Journey by Adam Hamilton. It was a DVD + weekly reading instead of our more normal DVD-driven studies.

There is also an Advent devotional that goes with it, which I'm putting on my list for Christmas 2013!

Stephen and I both really enjoyed this study. It delves into the traditional Christmas story and tries to help you really understand what was going on and also how that relates to you today. Some of the topics Hamilton tackles include
  • How old was Mary?
  • How old was Joseph?
  • Why did she have to give birth in a stable?
  • Who were the angels that visited Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds?
  • When did the Wise Men arrive?

This list really doesn't do the book justice. The Christmas story becomes so much more real when you consider how it really may have played out in all its fullness. The DVD was filmed in the Holy Land as Hamilton takes you on a tour of the places where the story took place.

We enjoyed this study so much that the class is planning to do Hamilton's Easter study: 24 Hours That Changed the World. There's also a Lenten devotional book that I might get to go along with it! Stephen even got a different Adam Hamilton under the Christmas tree this year!

A Week's Menu of Real Food

After the debacle that's holiday eating, it's time to get back on the bandwagon! There's a ton of random recipes that I want to try out and we also need to use up some of our random food. So this week's menu:

Sunday

  • Breakfast: We're planning to take Sydney to Creekside Restaurant for their Sunday breakfast. It's supposed to be yummy and inexpensive. I don't think this is a 100 Days of Real Food-approved place (not sure where they get their eggs, bacon, grits, etc.), but it will all be a good Southern-style breakfast!
  • Lunch: Whatever we can scrounge from the refrigerator. Maybe a PB&J (I do have Real Food-approved bread, peanut butter, and preserves!)?
  • Dinner: Leftover Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole (I made the cream of chicken soup from SCRATCH)
Monday:
  • Breakfast: Sydney has been eating a TON of breakfast lately. I'm going to make sure to offer her lots of fruit Monday morning while I make these: Ebelskivers. You have to have a special pan to make these, and I managed to catch a good one CHEAP on Amazon 2 weeks ago!
  • Lunch: Whatever we can scrounge from the refrigerator. Dinner leftovers?
  • Dinner: The easy crock pot chicken from 100 Days with a casserole from the freezer (probably squash)
Tuesday:
  • Breakfast: More fruit. Maybe some banana pancakes? I might make a full batch this time and freeze the other half
  • Lunch: Whatever we can scrounge from the refrigerator.
  • Dinner: Monday's leftovers
Wednesday:
  • Breakfast: Back to reality from the holidays. Fruit, yogurt, cereal (speaking of, I really want to try the Nature's Path O's and see how they are!)
  • Lunch: Whatever we can scrounge from the refrigerator.
  • Dinner: Turkey pot pie - I have to scrounge up my recipe and see if I can figure out some easy alterations for the bisquick topping - maybe these?
Thursday:
  • Breakfast: Fruit, yogurt, cereal
  • Lunch: Whatever we can scrounge from the refrigerator.
  • Dinner: Turkey pot pie leftovers
Friday:
  • Breakfast: Fruit, yogurt, cereal
  • Lunch: Whatever we can scrounge from the refrigerator.
  • Dinner: Clear-Out-the-Fridge Night
Snacks: I want to try a couple of easy snack recipes:
I also have a pumpkin cinnamon roll recipe I've been meaning to make for WEEKS. Maybe I'll finally get to that!

Christmas 2012 Continued

Little Miss S got Christmas morning at our house and

1) Christmas Eve at Mimi and Pop's
2) Christmas afternoon at Mammy and Pop's
3) the 27th at Cara's with Cara and Kimberly.

It's no wonder she thinks there are always presents to open! We had a fun-filled Christmas week with Daddy off of work (after working from 5 a.m. to early afternoon on the Saturday before).

We started with baking some graham cracker cookies on Saturday afternoon (we made chocolate chip oatmeal cookies on Christmas Eve morning for Santa and the Special Care nurses). Little Miss had a BLAST helping me cook. She's been wanting to "help" in the kitchen more lately - stirring sauces, for example, so I decided to give it a shot. She was actually very good at helping to dump ingredients in the bowl, turning on the food processor or the mixer, and rolling/cutting out the cookies! I think we're going to try a small cake recipe from her cooking set (Christmas present) tomorrow.

I love the faces she was making when rolling out the dough! It was a little tough to roll out, and I exaggerated how hard it was. She picked right up on the faces Mommy was making!

Saturday night we FINALLY made it to the Lights at Riverbanks Zoo. We thought Little Miss would love it since she's been all about the Christmas lights this year, but she was SO mad that she couldn't see the gorillas, kangaroos, and penguins that she barely paid any attention to the lights! She did enjoy a ride on the carousel though! She also really enjoyed the barn for a change. She wanted to touch the goats, who were too far away to reach, tried to feed the calf, who wasn't interested, and got to pet a pony!

Christmas Eve was ... interesting. We had a good morning, making cookie dough and visiting Pop Pop.

The afternoon was a whole other story. She REFUSED to nap. She stayed in her crib for an hour and a half and fussed for at least half of that time. She told me she wanted "my presents" when I would go in and try to convince her to take a nap. We finally gave up and got her dressed for the afternoon Christmas Eve service at my mom's church. I wasn't sure how I felt about light pink and blue for the nativity dress after I got it in the mail, but it turned out to be an ADORABLE outfit when paired with light pink shoes and pink bows on pigtails!

I had a bag full of quiet activities - magnetic paper dolls and a color wonderful Mickey Mouse set (the markers that only mark on the right paper). But Little Miss S was not interested in quiet. She played with the candle - off, on, off, on, clapped with the music (that was good), answered YEA when the minister asked if anyone was following his joke, and then proceeded to use the back of the pew in front of us as a handle for the floor trampoline. Stephen took her out, brought her back in, we went to the cry room (where we may have traumatized a couple with a little baby), and then finally we gave in and let her run up and down the hallway behind the sanctuary. She would stop for just a moment in front of the nativity set to say "Look the shepherds" before running off again.

Side story because I'll forget to write it down somewhere else: Little Miss playing with her nativity set and quickly understood the concept of "Baby Jesus". Then she started saying "Baby Jesus born." Then it became "Baby Jesus born in a barn." We'd ask, "Where was Baby Jesus born" "In a barn," was her answer! Technically correct, but it was so funny to hear her say it. It makes it sound like he never closed any doors!

Back to the church service: we did make it back in for Communion, the candle-"lighting", and "Silent Night". She was relatively well behaved after that, but boy was the first part of the service nerve-wracking!

We went back to Mimi and Pop's for dinner and presents. Little Miss was well behaved and actually ate quite a bit of dinner - including Mimi's salad - and dessert - 2 whole scoops of ice cream. The ice cream may have been a bad idea because she bounced off the walls while opening presents!

Mimi went all out for art supplies (Little Miss's favorite part was the safety scissors) and for outdoor play equipment. The swing hasn't arrived yet, but she now has a trampoline (still in the box), a basketball goal, AND a slide!
